Significance: Valentino's life significantly changed over the course of three months. One moment he is playing soccer with his friends and dealing with his crush on his sister's best friend and the next he is watching his father get pulled into the street, then he moves and his village gets attacked and he is running for his life. He is forced to survive in conditions and when he hides form these people it proves how much his life has changed. A few months ago he would have walked past them and waved but now he has to hide. He went from being a fee little boy to being a refugee from a war that he didn't know why it was happening.

Personal Connection: At this point I feel so bad for Valentino. He has been through so much and his journey isn't going to become any easier from this point on. He has to hide from anyone who might be dangerous just because he might not be on the same side of a war. But the thing is, he doesn't have a side.

Quote Question: How do you think you would feel in a situation like this? Would you be scared or would you do anything to survive?

" Yes of course," Achor Achor said, "Ham." - Achor Achor talking to Valentino's sponsors, Phil and Stacy.

Significance: All of the Lost Boys who come here don't know a lot about things in the United States. They made many small statements like that that showed their ignorance of small things. Valentino had to learn about so many things when he came here that everyone takes for granted. They honestly thought that a hamburger was made out of ham because they never had any in Sudan. Something that we see and hear about and know about we take for granted but they have never really seen a hamburger and when they did they just ate it without asking much about it. They had to learn almost everything when they came to the United States.

Personal Connection: I think it is strange that something that everyone kindergartner knows about isn't something everyone in other places does. We take so much for granted and we laugh when someone says something about that but honestly they don't really know better because they were never taught in Sudan. They never got a hamburger. Something maybe common here and we take it for granted, but elsewhere they may not even know what a certain item is.
