Chapter 7 - Shadows and Tall Trees
"Hunting The Beastie"
Perspective: Jack
Dear Journal,
Everyone looks different then when we first landed on the island. Our hair is longer, it now covers our eyes and I have to constantly sweep it out of mine to be able to see when I hunt. And after weeks of not bathing the sea brine has collected make our once pristine gray uniforms stiff and uncomfortable. The smell I am fine with although the first I am going to be forced to do if I ever got home would be to bath. But the smell helps disguise me when we go hunting for the pig and now that I am hunting the Beastie with some of the Biguns we will find it. Because I have been everywhere on the island except one place and that is where the Beastie would be because I would have seen it. Now that we are going to it's hideout we are going to definitely kill it. All the littleuns seemed quite dun about going to hunt it, actually they weren't but them being cowards they didn't want to come along so we had the fat one Piggy watch over them because he wouldn't be much use anyway.
When we were hunting for the beastie we saw a boar that speared me and gave me a bloody gash but I made it seem like I was impervious to the pain. Most got windy but I went after it and almost got it. Then we started playacting about the hunt and Robert became the pig, it was almost like the real hunt except we couldn't really kill him. Next time we could just use a littleun and if he got hurt no one would care because they don't do anything anyway. They are all justa waste and a pain I don't know why Ralph keeps helping them. But anyway, we all got in a circle and pretended to hunt him. We got into the hunt and we were jabbing at robert and everything, it was great fun, almost better then rugger. We got all excited and we decided we should do it again sometimes around the fire and all.
The reason I started hunting the beastie was because Sanneric saw the beastie on the mountain. It was big, a billowing black form that terrified everyone, even I was a tiny bit scared. But I tried to put on bravado and said that we should go and hunt the beastie. Everyone was so scared of the possiblity that there was actually a beastie that they all agreed.
Ralph thinks that he is the leader but all he does is talk, talk, talk. He is a coward and calls all of my hunters cowards. He doesn't listen or seem to do anything. I figure that I would make a btter leader them him. I would hunt and get people and everyone would have a leader that had some courage. Everything would be better.
